Frequently asked questions

What is a restaurant payroll software?

Restaurant payroll software handles the calculation and payment of wages for restaurant teams: hourly and salaried staff, tips, holiday pay, statutory deductions, tax submissions to HMRC. The best of it connects to scheduling and time-tracking so the pay run reflects what people actually worked, instead of starting with manual exports and reconciliation.

How does Nory's Payroll work?

The pay run is built automatically from the schedules, timecards and employee data already in Nory. Nory flags errors and variances before the pay run closes (missing clock-ins, unusual hours, missing SSP documents). You review the exceptions, make adjustments, approve. Your team gets paid.

Is Nory's Payroll fully self-serve?

Operators have full control over pay run preparation in Nory: approving timecards, reviewing payslips, adding adjustments, downloading reports, closing the pay run. Nory's team handles the final submission to HMRC, BACS payments, and statutory items like SMP, SPP, P11D and pension submissions. Full self-serve, including operator-controlled payments, is coming soon.

How does Nory handle tronc and gratuities?

Tips and tronc are calculated in Nory from your POS data and your configured distribution rules (equal, points-based by department, position, or tenure). Per-employee tip amounts flow into the pay run automatically. Compliance with the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Bill is built in.

Is Nory's payroll HMRC-compliant?

Yes. Nory handles real-time reporting to HMRC at launch (submitted by Nory's payroll team), along with statutory deductions, pension submissions, and end-of-year documents like P11D. As more capability becomes self-serve through 2026, the compliance model stays the same: every submission is HMRC-compliant, whether Nory's team runs it or the operator does.

How is Nory different from Sage, BrightPay, Xero or Fourth?

Other platforms (like Sage, BrightPay and Xero) are payroll tools disconnected from your scheduling and time-tracking data. Every pay run starts with a manual export from your schedule and timecards, then a spreadsheet reconciliation, then the actual pay run. Fourth bundles scheduling and payroll but doesn't proactively flag errors before pay day. Nory's pay run builds itself from the scheduling and timecard data already in your platform. Errors get surfaced before pay day, not after.

Can Nory run payroll across multiple restaurant locations?

Yes. Employees can work across multiple sites and Nory tracks hours, tips and absences per location. Pay runs handle the full team across the group from one dashboard, with site-level cost visibility for ops and finance.
